Afternoon tea, the most quintessential of British traditions, is thought to have been introduced by the 7th Duchess of Bedford in the mid-1800s. The Duchess wanted to combat the “sinking feeling” she felt in late afternoon. It has since become a popular and respected custom of British social life.
